What are dermal fillers?
People opt for dermal fillers to gain a more refreshed, youthful appearance. This elective treatment usually takes less than half an hour, and recovery time is minimal. Results are seen right away and can last from months to years, depending on the type of filler and the treated area.
At Modern Aestheticss, dermal fillers are planned and injected by our dermatologist, so the plan is built around your face rather than a fixed menu of syringes.
Why they are used
Replacing the volume collagen loss takes away
As you age, your body starts to lose collagen — the protein that gives skin its structure and elasticity. Skin becomes thinner, loses volume and starts to sag. Fillers put that structure back.
- Add volume to sagging skin
- Restore volume that has been lost over time
- Smooth wrinkles and creases in your face
- Make your facial features more symmetrical
Areas we treat
Filler is placed where volume has been lost, not everywhere at once.
Temples
Fills the hollowing that makes the upper face look drawn.
Tear trough
Softens the under-eye shadow caused by volume loss.
The materials
Types of dermal filler
Which filler is used depends on the area, the depth and how long you want it to last.
Hyaluronic acid (HA)
Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in your skin, giving it volume and holding water. Your body makes less of it with age. Results usually last six months to a year. Juvéderm, Teoxane and Restylane® are commonly used HA fillers.
Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA)
A substance also found in your bones, used for deeper wrinkles and firmer structural support. Results typically last around a year. Radiesse® is an example.
Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)
Rather than filling directly, PLLA prompts your body to build its own collagen, which is why it is used for deep facial wrinkles. Results can last two years or more. Sculptra is a PLLA filler.
What to expect
A short appointment, and results you can see the same day
- The injections usually take less than an hour, in clinic
- Most people see results right away
- Non-surgical, so recovery time is minimal
- Depending on the filler, results last from months to over two years
- Typically less expensive than an equivalent surgical procedure
Aftercare
Mild swelling, redness or bruising may occur and usually settles within a few days. Avoid strenuous activity and direct sun for 24 to 48 hours, keep hydrated, and follow the aftercare your dermatologist gives you — it is what protects the result you paid for.
